Doya: The Thomas case: Death in the family

Doya: The Thomas case: Death in the family

A/N: let's wrap the Thomas case, shall we?

XXXX

Oya stormed into the hospital room where her brother Joshua had been admitted. As soon as she received a text from Sarah, asking her to rush to the hospital, the hunter didn't think twice. She was expecting the worst and barely spoke to Dean -except for telling him to drive her to the hospital-. Her heart was beating hard against her ribcage because she didn't know what to expect and couldn't even think straight. When was the last time she saw him? Because of the investigation, she had not had the chance to visit Joshua more than once and he was still in a deep coma. Her heart was drumming in her ears as she pushed the door open, expecting to see a crying Sarah and a dead Joshua. What she saw, however, fried her brain and made her freeze on the spot.

« Why the long face, O ? » -His voice, still cracked and dried up by the long weeks spent in a coma, tore through the silence that had settled in the room.-

« Josh... » -She dropped her phone, quickly followed by Dean who caught up with her. The phone broke as the glass hit the floor, but Oya didn't car at this moment. All she saw was her brother sitting on his bed, with his girlfriend sitting next to him and his sister standing in the room. Sarah was crying, just as Oya expected, but those were joyous tears. « Joshua? » Oya repeated, unsure of the reality of what she was seeing. He nodded quietly and motioned for her to come closer.

« In the flesh. » He joked a little before Sarah looked at Oya with her puffy blue eyes. She averted her gaze from the ebony hunter to the older Winchester who cleared his throat as he silently entered the bedroom. « C'mere Oya.. don't be afraid. »

« I'm not afraid, idiot... I just.. » She knelt and grabbed the hand he was offering her. Her eyes quickly filled themselves with unshed tears as she didn't know how to process the immense joy she was experiencing. « I thought you were dead. » She admitted.

« Oh wow.. you buried me already? » He teased her before he squeezed her hand with his. « I'm alive, bitch. » He chuckled painfully before he looked at Sarah who took over to explain things. She cleared her throat and walked towards Dean.

«Last week, doctors realized that Joshua was able to breathe on his own so they removed the machine from him. He was.. he survived the first night, then the other, and his vitals improved. They called me, said that they weren't sure he would make it but would closely monitor him and his health had improved so much that he woke up yesterday. They didn't tell me because they wanted to make sure he would wake up today and when he did, they called me. I had Stephanie take a plane, I had you here. I have you all here.. » She said wiping off some tears. Oya nodded and chuckled nervously as she squeezed her brother's hand as tight as she could with both of her hands.

« He's alive... you... you're alive Josh... I just... I didn't want to lose you. » She said, holding back her sobs. Dean noticed she was on the verge of crying so he walked towards her and quietly put his hand over her shoulders.

« What got me? »

« Is it really the time to talk about it? » Asked Sarah with a furrowed brows. Stephanie nodded.

« It is. I need to know. Go ahead O, tell me what was the fucking thing that did this to my babe. »

« A Daeva.... it was a Daeva. » She said pulling herself back on her feet but still holding onto her brother's hand. « The Priest was the right lead. 5 years ago, when people started to die left and right, your priest actually met with a demon, disguised as one of his church-goers. He befriended the person, fell in love with them, and now that he had broken his celibacy vows, he wasn't sanctified anymore. They were able to play with the priest's ambitions and manipulate him into using more and more of their evil power. »

« A Daeva, working for a demon who worked for a Priest.. would you look at that. Un-fucking-believable. » He exclaimed before a burst of laughter escaped his lips. He then looked at Stephanie and broke it into simpler words. « A Daeva is a special kind of demon, usually summoned by other demons. It's very powerful and vicious. I see that you had trouble getting rid of it. » He said looking at how roughed up and bruised Oya and Dean were. Oya shrugged, the pain almost overcome by the sheer joy of seeing him alive.

« It was quite a handful. » Dean modestly said.

Truth be told, it wasn't as easy as it looked like. The Daeva's weakness being Light and black magic, it had to be a combination of both. Oya used ancient magic from Cameroon oldest tribes, to be able to vanquish the demon. It took a full-blown ritual, involving a chicken's sacrifice and some symbols painted over her body with the animal's blood to be able to have access to that type of magic and the realm it drew its power from. Then Dean managed to hold the creature long enough to make it fall into the trap they designed and expose it to pure bright light. Their clothes were torn at some places, their skins were torn open as well, and the internal injuries they both got from fighting a demon and using dark magic was written all over their faces. Yet, it was nothing for the two of them since their hunt ended successfully. It didn't matter now, to Oya, since Joshua wasn't dead.

« You will soon be able to go back to your life. » Oya said, pressing her lips to the back of his hand. The brunette's smile faded and he shrugged and pulled his hand away from her. « What ?.... » Oya genuinely asked, before she realized that Joshua was more affected by her words than he let her know. « What ? » she repeated before her hazel eyes averted from him to Sarah. « Sarah! WHAT ? »

« Oya.. calm down, please. » She started with but Oya furrowed her brows and put both hands on her waist. « J-Josh.. »

« Josh what ?? » She looked at them with eyes wide open. What was there that they couldn't say to her? Why didn't they want to answer her, She could feel in her guts that the news would be terrible but since they refused to speak, her anxiety became stronger. She looked at Sarah who was crying even harder now and tightened her fists. « Please... tell me what's going on! Josh.. what are you not saying? Uh? What are you not saying ? »

« O... » Dean held onto her shoulder and pulled her against him, but she refused to calm down and kept asking over and over what was happening. Sobs were strangling her voice as she was expecting to hear the worst news now and anger and lack of understanding of the reason for their silence. She couldn't take it and neither could the others. Joshua finally said, in a stern but commanding voice.

« I'm paralyzed! Oya I can't feel shit below the waist ! » -Silence followed and Oya started to sob, as she was unable to hold back her tears any longer. She cried her heart out and sobbed so hard that the only thing she could think of was to hug Dean and let him wrap his arms around her frame to comfort her.-

Joshua, paralyzed? It didn't make any sense for the ebony hunter who didn't know how to react to the news. She knew what hunting meant to him and how he could never imagine a life without working on cases. She knew that now crippled, Stephanie would never want him to work on cases as the muscles, so he would have to team up with other hunters. The future was still fog as they spoke now, for neither Oya nor Joshua knew what to expect from the future yet, it didn't stop Oya from crying her all.

« I'm sorry, I'm so sorry Joshua... » Was all she could say. He barely managed to smile to her, this time holding onto Stephanie's hand as tightly as he could. « I'm so sorry... »

« I'm alive, Oya. I could have died but here I am. Yes, we're upset and this probably is the last of me as a hunter you'd see... but I'm not dead yet. I'm not dead and we'll focus on this okay? I'll need to figure out a few things myself, but I'm alive. Keep that in mind. You too, Sarah. I'm not done yet. » He then glanced at Dean who was comforting Oya with one of his strong hugs and gently nodded. It was the first time they actually met, and he wished things would have been different, but he was fine with finally seeing the man who made his sister happy... « Nice to meet you, Dean. I'm sorry we meet under such circumstances, but I guess sometimes we can't really choose. »

« Nice to meet you too, Kiddo. It's okay, I've seen worse. » He said with a little grin. This simple joke made both men chuckle and lightened up the atmosphere. It allowed for Oya to regain her composure and consider Joshua's words and situation. Yes, he was confused, and of course, he didn't quite know what it entailed but he knew he was alive and Stephanie was still by his side, holding onto his hand. Her brother was alive, and he was already optimistic about his future. For once, the hunter decided that maybe, just maybe, allowing other people's feelings to influence her wasn't that much of a bad idea. There was a death in the family, followed by a rebirth. Joshua survived.
