A vintage's touch: Mary knew

Mary knew, deep down that something was not right with Tommy. it wasn't so much the fact he rarely smiled since the deaths of both Grace and John, no, Mary was used to his face, she knew the simplest creases and half-smiles he gave her. It wasn't the fact he spoke little, Tommy wasn't a man of many words. He usually would process the information in his brain for a long time before finally, he found the words he wanted to say. However, Tommy was restless. She had already seen him pace around, unable to find peace as his mind was traveling miles away from where he was. Something was bothering him but she didn't know what.

Tommy couldn't say what was stressing him out. It had everything to do with Mary, her safety, her smiles, and the fact he admitted to himself that she meant way more than he could ever say. He had tried, the night of her birthday, he had tried to convince himself that he could look away from her, that she was just a friend of the family, but quickly the thoughts crumbled away because it wasn't true. Mary was more, far more than just a friend. She was loyal, patient, sweet, and soft. She cared for him, for his child, for his family... She cared for him...Genuinely so.

How long had it been, since someone genuinely cared for him? Mary learned how to care for horses just so they could spend more time together. Charlie loved her, and even sometimes called her "mum" by accident.  What could he do? What could he do? She spent all her nights in his bed, cuddling him, loving him, giving him her affection.  She ran her hand through his hair, calmed his demons, soothed his heart, and meant its tear. She made him feel good, and by her side, he no longer heard the tunnels. So yes, he was restless, because now he had something to lose, again. He was restless because he couldn't bear the thought of losing the woman he loved. Yes, loved...

Mary knew when Tommy was restless and upset, but since she couldn't know what was going through his brain, she simply wrapped her arms around his frame, let her fingers run through his black hair, keep him close to her heart.
