A vintage's touch: Asking for a sibling

"Mom? When are Dad and you going to make me a sibling?"

The question escaped the lips of her angelic little boy. He was running around after his music lesson and found his mother in the garden, tending to the roses. Mary didn't have to work in the garden, but she did enjoy spending time there. it helped with her mood. it helped bond with Charlie. His question, however, had the woman stop hosing the flowers and welcome the child who wrapped his arms around her knees, in a gentle hug.

"A... sibling?"

"Yes, mom. I don't want to be an only child anymore. I want to have a little sister or a little brother so we could play together."

"Charlie.." She turned the water off and pulled the child into a hug so she could carry him on her hip. "It's..."

"Do you know how to make babies? I heard that a daddy has to love a mommy really hard to make it happen."

"Y--Yes, that's right."

"Daddy doesn't love you very much?"

"Why are you saying this?" She asked, gently stroking some of Charlie's hair off of his face.  He didn't let her speak more.

"Because if he did you would have had a baby by now! Besides, You're not married like mother and dad were."

"Charlie... Charlie. I think you're a very clever little man and you're having a lot of imagination. Your father is very busy. I haven't seen him in a while but that doesn't mean I don't love him very very much. Your father loves you too. You are his world." She pressed kisses to his cheeks and he put both of his little hands on her cheeks. "It takes some time to have a baby, you know?"

"I hope you will have one soon. I would like a sibling. I will ask Dad about it." He seemed determined and Mary couldn't help but feel some tears fill her eyes.

Charlie didn't take no for an answer. He chose her to be his mother and she finally accepted his full-on affection. It just came naturally. The child loved her dearly and for him, it was a no-brainer that Mary was his mom. his mother, Grace, was in Heaven and he decided to refer to her as such and keep "mom" for Mary.  He knew his parents loved each other and his innocence, just made the nurse blush and hug the child. It felt good to have a family and on days like these, Charlie reminded her of it.
