He thought he would be relieved now that Mary was with his brother. For years Tommy and Mary have been beating around the bush, frustratingly so. They were deeply in love with each other, already a family along with Charlie, and yet, they refused to admit it to each other, let alone to the rest of the family. They had their reasons and Arthur could understand why Tommy didn't want to admit his love for Mary. He lost all the women in his life. All the women he cared for so why would it be different with Mary?
For Arthur things were a bit different. He didn't want to fail yet another sister. he still couldn't get over Grace's death and still blamed himself for being drunk and allowing Grace to be murdered. He didn't want to fail Mary and have her blood in his hands because he knew that he would never be able to forgive himself if anything happened to her. Sweet Mary pulled him back on his feet when even Ada had enough of his inability to handle himself. Sweet Mary talked to him and comforted him when Linda left. Sweet Mary made his brother happy, he couldn't allow the curse of the Shelbys to touch her... he couldn't allow him to be weak enough and fail his sister. He just couldn't... He just wouldn't.
