Elijah loved his family. Klaus, despite his self-destructive tendencies, had always had a special place in his heart. He had to look after him, more than he did his other siblings (save maybe for Rebekah). He took it upon himself to always keep the bond between the Mikaelsons. He could sometimes be beside himself, a little bit too arrogant but that ran in their blood. His arrogance and dedication to his family blinded him.
He wasn't able to see just how much pain he put Mary in. He was unable to see how important he was to her. He wasn't able to see that keeping her a secret would hurt her more than he thought it would. Mary considered him a friend, but he failed even at that. She ended up meeting his brother. She ended up bonding with Klaus and worst of all, they got along perfectly well.
Now, his brother was missing and the only person who would know about his whereabouts didn't want to talk to Elijah. It was just unnerving. It was so bad that she was openly hostile to him. He had to make amends with her and he would begin quite swiftly.
